Parenting is hard enough, add neurodiversity into the mix and the balancing act of supporting your child through hormonal changes, academic demands, pressure from friends and social media can send you reeling! You might be wondering how to support your child with best ways to thrive!
Parent behaviour training offers you a toolkit of strategies to develop executive functions in your child, as well as reflect on models of behaviour you can adopt to support your neurodiverse child. Children with ADHD will have difficulties with restlessness, motivation, time awareness, flexibility, talking too much, zoning out and reacting disproportionately. As parents, you want to keep them safe and provide a loving and nurturing environment for them to flourish, but their unpredictable behaviours and mood swings can really push all your buttons. Seeing they are having a difficult time regulating energy is a more helpful way to view their struggles and will inform your scaffolding techniques to meet their neurodivergent needs.
Having worked with children and families for many years as educationalist and youth mentor and now ADHD coach, I have devised a framework of 6 ways to model resilience to support the behaviour your child needs to learn to mature. Whatever you notice in your child’s behaviour can be met with one of these approaches and/or a combination of them. Essentially, they are ways to keep your own energy focused on your relationship and building positive habits, instead of focusing on what your child does not yet have in their executive function toolkit.
