What is life coaching?

Life Coaching is a process of identifying inner motivations that can lead us towards reaching a different, more realistic and often more empowered place in life. We often don't know what is holding us back, we feel trapped and stuck; we know we could accomplish more and find greater fulfilment but we've never had the conversation with ourselves to find out what it is we need to change!

Life Coaching is about having those engaging conversations with someone who won't judge your thoughts and actions, who won't impose their opinions on you, who actually won't give you any advice, because the light that illumines your pathway for action is unleashed through powerful but simple questions and reflections, which you answer as and when is right for you.

Life Coaching involves a rapport led, structured, yet very open dialogue, where you as client bring issues and observations to each session. With your coach you can explore where there might be obstacles to progress and what action plans you really do want to carry out. Often an issue you bring to the session evolves into something quite different by the end of the hour, as you begin to see what your true motivations are and take ownership for your own flourishing. Be assured of total confidentiality, I follow an agreed code of ethical practice.

Life Coaching sessions are normally held once a fortnight for a period of 3-6 months, after which you will have gained more insight and put into practice very specific tools and strategies to get to where you want to go.  You can restart coaching any time you want, as and when you need to revisit the process or need to refresh some of the tools that you've found helpful but need to talk through again.

It's important to have an initial intake session where coach and client can get a feel for the relational process and decide if it works for both of them. There might be issues a client would benefit more from discussing with a therapist or strategies that are more the remit of a consultant or mentor.

Life coaching is about reaching new life goals and reframing possibilities for action and not about inner healing or overcoming trauma, which are the focus of psychotherapy. A Life Coach can often recommend a suitable therapist, as both interventions can be helpful simultaneously, but not in the same session.
